A week's holiday in Normandy, in September, allowed us to make a stop just at the verge of the beach; and Lara, for the first time since her release from the hospital, planted her feet in the sand, close to the waterline. During the most difficult moments of her treatment (a taxing examination or procedure, times of pain and discomfort), the beaches of Normandy had been her place of spiritual refuge. That is where she found temporary solace. We were the only ones there, as far as the eye could see.
Who would have thought?, she sighed. The emotional release was so huge that she broke into tears, and we hugged, savoring the moment, private and public all in one.
