Adriatico 2010

2010

We spent the last summer vacation before Lara fell ill in Vieste, on Italy's East Coast. The town boasts some of the finest osterias I know, for dining inside or al fresco. Frutti di mare in varieties that left us baffled as to what we were actually eating, are their unsurpassed specialties. Perennial sunshine coaxes visitors to gelaterias and shaded terraces. Early morning cappuccinos, shopping, beach life, Italian cuisine and fine company were the recurrent items of our days. Lara and I swam in the sea in front of Hotel Seggio, and played scrabble on the balcony, at cocktail time. We remember being totally happy, with no end in sight.

This is how I found Lara in front of the first shop-window outside of our hotel door, clad in the snake dress she had bought that afternoon. (I ended up buying her a pair of earrings there, white and silver.)
